Reclaiming Your Time in Business: It Can Make a Difference in Your Life Too

Have you ever finished a busy day of working on your business and wondered... where did the entire day go? As business owners, it can be so easy to get caught up in everything that needs to be done. Emails need answering. Clients need support. Administrative tasks pile up. There is marketing to think about, finances to stay on top of, projects to finish, and of course all of those little tasks that somehow find their way onto our to do lists. Before we know it, our business can start taking up more and more of our time, but here is something I have been thinking about a lot lately: Your business should support your life, not take it over.

What Does Reclaiming Your Time Actually Mean?

When I talk about reclaiming your time, I don't mean doing less simply for the sake of doing less. I mean taking a good look at where your time is currently going and asking yourself:

Does all of this really need to be taking up my time? There may be task you could simplify. There may be things you are doing manually that could have a better system. There may be tasks that someone else could take off your plate, and sometimes, there may even be things you have been doing simply because you have always done them that way.

Reclaiming your time is about becoming more intentional with the way you run your business. Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

You don't necessarily need to completely change the way you run your business overnight. Sometimes it starts with one small change. Maybe you create a better system for keeping track of client information instead of searching through emails every time you need something. Maybe you set aside certain times to answer emails rather than checking your inbox constantly throughout the day. Maybe you create templates for something you find yourself writing over and over again, or maybe you finally decide that there are a few tasks you don't need to be doing yourself anymore. One small change might save you only 15 to 20 minutes at first, but those minutes add up, and more importantly, every task that you simplify can create a little more breathing room in your day.

What Could You Do With That Time?

This is the part I think we sometimes forget about. Reclaiming time in your business isn't just about becoming more productive. It's also about what that extra time allows you to do outside of your business as well.

Maybe it means more time with your friends.

Maybe it means being able to put your kids to sleep. Maybe it means being able to take a vacation. All of those things matter too.

You Don't Have to Do Everything Yourself

This is another lesson I think is very important for Business Owners. Doing everything yourself doesn't necessarily mean you are doing what is best for your business. Sometimes asking for help, delegating something, putting a system in place, or finding a simpler way of doing something can actually help your business run smoother. It gives you more time to focus on things that truly need you.

Starting today, look at what your average week looks like and ask yourself: What is taking up more of my time than it should? That one question might show you exactly where you need to start.

Your Time Matters Too

We spend too much time thinking about our clients, customers, businesses, goals and everything we want to accomplish, but our own time deserves to be thought of as well

Building a successful business is important, but so is building a life that you actually have time to enjoy, and sometimes reclaiming even a small amount of time in your business can be the beginning of a much bigger change. This week I challenge you to find one thing in your business that you could simplify, organize, delegate or do differently. You might be surprised by the difference one small change can make.
